Sewer & drainage

Tree Roots Causing Sewer Blockages — Narre Warren

The job: Attended a property in Narre Warren to investigate a blocked sewer drain and determine the underlying cause. After clearing the sewer drainage, ran a CCTV drain inspection that identified significant tree root intrusion restricting the internal diameter of the pipe. Used sewer locating to inspect and locate the affected section from above ground, identifying the position of the root intrusion.

Why it matters: Tree roots can enter sewer drainage through existing cracks, damaged pipework or compromised joints. Clearing the blockage may restore flow, but if an underlying drainage defect remains, there is an increased risk of further root intrusion and recurring sewer blockages.

Homeowner tip: If your sewer or toilet keeps blocking, tree roots may be one of the underlying causes. A CCTV drain inspection can help identify what's happening inside the pipe rather than repeatedly clearing the blockage without investigating the cause.

Fine Detail Plumbing technician clearing a blocked stormwater drain with hydro jetting hose in a Clyde backyard Tree root mass removed from a blocked stormwater drain during hydro jetting in Clyde

Blocked stormwater drain cleared — hydro jetting & tree root removal, Clyde

The job: Attended a property in Clyde to investigate a blocked stormwater drain. Used high-pressure hydro jetting to clear the affected stormwater drainage, and during the process found tree root intrusion — the root mass was removed to restore proper flow. Also carried out drain locating on the existing underground stormwater pipework to identify the affected drainage route.

Why it matters: Clearing the blockage is only half the job — locating and tracing the actual pipe route means the client knows exactly what's under their property and where, with any areas needing future attention flagged upfront rather than left as a surprise.

Hydro jetting and CCTV drain camera equipment set up at a sewer access point in Berwick

Blocked sewer cleared — hydro jetting & CCTV inspection, Berwick

The job: Attended a property in Berwick to investigate a blocked sewer drain. Used high-pressure hydro jetting to clear the blockage and restore flow, then ran a CCTV drain inspection to check the internal condition of the pipework and identify anything that may have caused it.

Why it matters: Checking the pipe after clearing it, not just before, means the client gets a clear picture of the sewer line's actual condition and whether anything further is likely to be needed — not just a blockage cleared and left as a mystery.

Sewer drain location marked on the ground near a tree in Berwick during a root intrusion investigation CCTV drain camera footage showing significant tree root intrusion inside a Berwick sewer line

Blocked sewer traced to tree root intrusion — Berwick

The job: Attended a property in Berwick to investigate a blocked sewer drain. After clearing it, ran a CCTV drain inspection to find the underlying cause — significant tree root intrusion, with a nearby tree sitting right in the vicinity of the affected pipework. Used sewer locating to pinpoint the affected section from above ground and plan the right rectification work.

Why it matters: Tree roots get into sewer drains through existing cracks, damage or compromised joints — they don't cause the initial defect, but they'll keep exploiting it, leading to repeated blockages and further deterioration if it's not addressed properly.

Homeowner tip: Avoid planting large trees directly over or close to known sewer drainage where possible. Root systems naturally seek out moisture and will exploit any existing weakness in underground pipework.

CCTV drain camera equipment set up beside an open stormwater pit during a drainage inspection in Cranbourne

CCTV Stormwater Drain Inspection for Property Flooding — Cranbourne

The job: Attended a property in Cranbourne following reports of ongoing flooding around the property. Ran a full CCTV drain inspection — a stormwater drain inspection covering the existing pipework — to check for blockages or defects contributing to the flooding.

Why it matters: The cause of flooding around a property isn't always obvious. A CCTV drain inspection provides a clear internal view of the stormwater drainage system, helping identify blockages or defects before recommending the appropriate next step.

CCTV drain camera equipment set up at a septic and grease trap access point in Beaconsfield

CCTV Drain Inspection, Grease Trap & Septic System Check — Beaconsfield

The job: Attended a newly purchased property in Beaconsfield to run a CCTV drain inspection of the existing drainage, along with a septic system inspection and grease trap inspection. The inspection covered accessible pipework to assess its condition and operation and identify any visible defects or potential concerns.

Why it matters: Buying a property means inheriting whatever's already in the ground — a proper CCTV check gives a new owner a clear, honest picture of the drainage and septic system's condition, rather than finding out the hard way once something goes wrong.

CCTV drain camera footage showing tree root intrusion inside a 100mm sewer line in Wantirna CCTV drain camera footage showing a broken PVC sewer bend found during inspection in Wantirna

Blocked toilet traced to tree roots and a broken sewer bend — Wantirna

The job: Attended a property in Wantirna for a blocked toilet — no other fixtures were affected, so the issue was isolated to that blocked sewer drain. Removed the toilet suite to access the sewer line, then ran a CCTV drain inspection that found tree root intrusion in the 100mm sewer pipe. Carried out tree root removal with high-pressure hydro jetting, then re-inspected — which is when we found a broken sewer bend associated with the root intrusion.

Why it matters: Clearing the roots without identifying the damaged sewer bend would leave the underlying defect unresolved and increase the likelihood of another blockage. The client's been advised of the defect and what's needed to fix it properly, rather than just clearing today's blockage and leaving the actual cause in the ground.

Sewer line renewal, redirected for a direct run — Somerville

The job: Renewed 40m of old sewer line with new 100mm PVC pipe, installed on a straight, direct alignment with the required fall.

Why it matters: Poorly configured drainage, excessive changes of direction and sections with inadequate fall can increase the likelihood of material collecting and recurring blockages. The renewed sewer was installed with a more direct route and appropriate fall.

Terracotta Sewer Replaced & Boundary Trap Renewed — Edithvale

The job: Found old, deteriorated terracotta sewer pipe underground, along with a failed boundary trap. Replaced 12 metres of new sewer pipe and installed a new boundary trap. The completed drainage works were inspected and passed by the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) before backfilling.

Why it matters: Old terracotta pipe cracks and shifts over decades, letting tree roots in — often the real reason a "blockage" keeps returning no matter how many times it's cleared.

Corroded galvanised water line replaced with copper — Wantirna

The job: Pulled out old, corroded galvanised steel water pipe and replaced it with a new copper water line.

Why it matters: Galvanised steel corrodes from the inside over time — rust builds up and ends up in the water coming out of your taps. Copper doesn't corrode the same way, so it's a proper long-term fix.

Gutters cleared before winter rain caused damage — Narre Warren

The job: Cleaned out gutters full of debris before they overflowed — straightforward roof plumbing maintenance done before the wet weather made it worse.

Why it matters: Overflowing gutters don't just spill onto the ground — they can find their way inside through the roofline, and blocked gutters can back up into the stormwater drainage system too.

Damaged and leaking frost valve on a roof-mounted solar hot water system in Narre Warren New frost valve installed on a solar hot water system in Narre Warren

Leaking Solar Hot Water Frost Valve — Narre Warren

The job: Attended a property in Narre Warren after the client noticed the sound of water continuously running through the downpipe despite there being no rainfall. An inspection of the roof-mounted solar hot water system identified a damaged and leaking frost valve, allowing water to discharge onto the roof and into the guttering and downpipe. The faulty valve was removed and replaced with a new one, and the system was tested afterward to confirm the leak had stopped and it was operating correctly.

Homeowner tip: Hearing water running through your gutters or downpipes when it hasn't been raining can indicate a water leak or hot water system fault. Investigating it early can help prevent unnecessary water loss and identify failing components before the problem worsens.

Vulcan 135 replacement, same-day, after a burst tank — Berwick

The job: Old hot water tank had actually burst — water everywhere, no hot water. Replaced with a new Vulcan 135, same day.

Why it matters: A burst tank isn't always obvious until it happens — tanks corrode from the inside over years. Rust-coloured water or a banging/rumbling sound when heating are early warning signs worth acting on.

Faulty leaking toilet pan connector causing sewer odour in Endeavour Hills New toilet pan connector installed in Endeavour Hills

Leaking Toilet Pan Connector Causing Water & Sewer Odour — Endeavour Hills

The job: Attended a property in Endeavour Hills after the client noticed an unpleasant smell around the toilet and water appearing around the front and rear of the toilet suite. An inspection identified a faulty, leaking toilet pan connector — the seal between the toilet outlet and sewer drainage. The toilet suite was disconnected and removed to access the connection, the faulty pan connector was replaced, and the toilet was reinstalled and tested on completion.

Homeowner tip: If you notice water around the base of your toilet or a persistent sewer smell in the bathroom, don't ignore it. A leaking toilet pan connector or failed seal may be allowing water or sewer gases to escape and should be inspected.

Roof & guttering
Roof and gutter inspection on a tiled roof in Narre Warren before repair Close-up of rusted, corroded gutter section in Narre Warren before waterproof coating repair

Rusted gutter leak repair with protective coating — Narre Warren

The job: Attended a property in Narre Warren to inspect a rusted, leaking gutter that had deteriorated over time, with significant surface corrosion and areas beginning to leak. Full replacement wasn't within the client's current budget, so we carried out a roof plumbing gutter repair instead — preparing and treating the affected sections and applying a protective waterproof gutter coating to seal the deteriorated areas.

Why it matters: A remedial coating can help extend the serviceable life of ageing guttering at a fraction of full replacement cost — a genuinely practical option rather than the most expensive one by default. Given the existing age and condition, full replacement may still be needed down the track, and we said so upfront.
